Introduction to Panchabootha Sthalams

Introduction to
Pancha Bootha Sthalams

The human body consists of five elements of nature:
  • Our body is the Earth.
  • The warmth in the body is Fire.
  • Our beath is Air.
  • Water is a major componenet of our body.
  • Our thoughts is space.
To emphasise this and in representation of this concept our ancestors have established 'pancha-bootha-sthalas ' with Siva as the deity. Siva is the 'aadhi' (the beginning) and the 'anthyam' (the end). So in each of the 'pancha-bootha sthalams' the icon is a Lingam in one of the five different elements. The five Sthalas are :
  • ' boomi-lingam ' ( earth ) in Kanchipuram
  • ' Agni-lingam ' ( fire ) in Thruvanamalai
  • ' Vayu-lingam ' ( air ) in Kalahasthi
  • ' Jala-lingam ' ( water ) in Jambu-keswaram
  • ' Akash-lingam ' ( space ) in Chidhambaram
